Salary Range: $43,292.00 (USD) Annually

We currently have an exciting part time career opportunity available to join the HKNC team as a American Sign Language Interpreter. The Interpreter is responsible for providing on-campus and field interpreting to consumers, staff, stakeholders, and outside visitors as needed.

Schedule: 21 hours per week

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provide on-campus and field interpreting as required.
  • Provide instruction in American Sign Language and Pro-Tactile and/ or adaptation to accessible Communication to staff and students as assigned.
  • Provide communications training to assigned participants
  • Provide consumer education related to interpreting issues.
  • May be required to teach and interpret for selected staff/students and others, other than the regularly scheduled work period. If this occurs outside daytime hours, work hours will be adjusted accordingly.
  • Maintain daily progress notes on assigned students and submit regular written reports to supervisor.
  • Assist in the preparation of learning aids,
  • Participate in meetings to understand the unique issues of students and plan a team approach for solving these issues.
  • Shares responsibility for the equipment and general appearance of the work area.
  • Accompany and serve as a guide and/or interpreter for participants, professional staff members, and guests as assigned. Duties may require the use of a personal vehicle for travel to field sites, meetings, or events, including travel to Albany, NY, and Washington, D.C., for on-site interpretation.
  • Flexibility with work schedules, including some evening hours and overnight stays, is necessary to meet participants' and staff members’ needs. Occasional travel may be required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Required Bachelor’s degree.
  • Required ITP (Interpreting Training Program- must have passed written RID test) RID/NAD NIC Knowledge test must have passed.
  • Two or three years of interpreting experience with individuals who are DeafBlind and/or deaf-visually impaired.
  • Must obtain RID/NAD NIC certification within 5 years of employment.
  • Proficiency in methods of communication utilized by individuals who are DeafBlind.
  • Some evening hours will be scheduled based upon students or staff needs and must be flexible with travel when needed.
