Job Description

Position Title: Drill Operator
Department: Fiber Operations
Reports To: VP of Fiber Operations
Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt
Starting Pay: $32/hour ($34/hour upon CDL certification)
Start Date: May 22, 2025

Summary

The Drill Operator plays a key leadership role in Montana Internet's underground fiber construction team. This position is responsible for operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment, maintaining strict safety and traffic control standards, and stepping up to support the team in whatever way is needed to ensure successful fiber deployments.

Responsibilities
  • Operate HDD equipment safely and effectively on job sites
  • Lead job site traffic control and ensure public and crew safety
  • Review job prints and locate utilities; plan and communicate drill paths
  • Serve as a hands-on mentor to teammates
  • Take initiative across all areas of the job-not just drilling. This includes loading/unloading materials, helping with hand digging, site restoration, and anything else needed to move the project forward
  • Maintain equipment and keep job sites clean and organized
  • Ensure all drill shots are approved by the CEO and VP of Fiber Operations
  • Stay current with training requirements and complete CDL certification

Qualifications
  • Experience operating HDD or comparable heavy machinery
  • Familiarity with traffic control and utility locating procedures
  • Strong communication and team leadership skills
  • Ability to interpret construction maps and job specifications
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL must be obtained per timeline
  • A positive, proactive, "whatever it takes" approach to the work
