Job Description

The Department of Art is looking to hire a motivated student to be a Gallery Assistant. A successful candidate will be supporting exhibition programming in the Kimura Gallery in the Fine Arts Building and the Arc Gallery in the Consortium Library. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in the day to day operations of galleries that enhance the curriculum of studio art, art history, and general education courses. This position will be 15 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters.

Responsibilities include:

Exhibition Preparation
  • Assist in hanging and installation of art exhibits at the Kimura Gallery and Arc Gallery.
  • Packing and unpacking of artwork
  • Repairing gallery walls after de-install of exhibitions
  • Documentation of artwork using condition reports
  • Facilitate drop off of submissions to group shows by artists

Exhibition Outreach

  • Post exhibition advertisement on campus
  • Communicate exhibition details with CAS, Green and Gold, ADN, and other news outlets

Reception Preparation

  • Set up and take down for gallery receptions

Monitoring in the Kimura Gallery and Arc Gallery

  • Supervising visitors in the galleries.

The Kimura and Arc Galleries are integral components of the art program at UAA. A rotating selection of local, national, and international artists featured in Gallery exhibitions provides students access to first-hand primary source research opportunities which enhances the curriculum of studio art, art history, and general education courses.

A Gallery Assistant will be successful if they are able to work carefully and methodically while executing all outlined responsibilities. They should also work independently in a self-directed manner and communicate clearly and in a positive manner with and a wide variety of community members such as other students, staff, and faculty, exhibiting artists, and gallery visitors. Dependability is crucial. Students must be able to work assigned hours, with some evening hours required.

To thrive in this roll, the candidate must have the following skills:

  • Comfortable with operation of simple hand tools such as drills, sanders, and hammers while following appropriate safety guidelines and the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.
  • Ability to work carefully and methodically while executing all outlined responsibilities.
  • Must demonstrate clear communication skills–both written and in person–and be able to work with a wide variety of community members including: staff, faculty, students, exhibiting artists and gallery visitors.
  • Proficient in Email, Microsoft Office Suite and Google Docs
  • Ability to complete some of the responsibilities as outlined in this job description in a self-directed manor without close supervision.

Minimum Qualifications:

To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:

a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and
c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or is a newly enrolled student.

This position requires the ability to lift 40 lbs. and an interest in art and working in galleries or museums.

Position Details:

This position is located on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus in Anchorage, Alaska. This is a part-time, Student Assistant 2 position with a minimum pay of 15.88/hr.
