Position Summary:

The Community Engagement Coordinator will work as a part of the Planning and Community Engagement team led by the Director of Community Projects and Engagement, under the direction of the Assistant Director of Community Engagement. This position will be responsible for engaging with community members, local government entities, and partner organizations to build trusting relationships, understand community priorities, and support a strong network of park advocates.

The ideal candidate is committed to community-building, loves parks and engaging with diverse populations, uses Pittsburghs public parks, and will proactively and effectively support and strengthen the community engagement activities of the PPC.

Position Duties:

Performs under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Community Engagement and is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

Public Programming and Community Events

• Support public programming in PPC-funded parks, including but not limited to Hays Woods, Allegheny Commons, Riverview Park, and McKinley Park.
• Plan, execute, and evaluate public events that align with PPCs outreach and engagement goals.
• Co-lead the coordination of seasonal PPC events such as the Lake Elizabeth Spring cleanup, Earth Month programming, and Arbor Day activities.
• Serve as primary contact for event coordination with partner organizations, vendors, and City departments.

Capital Project Engagement Support

• Assist with the development and implementation of engagement plans for capital projects and ongoing engagement efforts to seek input and maximize participation during park planning processes, capital project implementation, and other park projects.
• Coordinate community/project meetings and events, both for virtual and in-person settings. Includes scheduling, securing meeting spaces, preparing and transporting event materials, facilitating small group discussions, and recording notes and feedback.
• Attend project team meetings and provide facilitation support by tracking attendees, taking notes, and assisting with follow up tasks as assigned.
• Work with project team to identify community members and partner organizations to build and sustain relationships with on a project-by-project basis.
• Develop outreach strategies and materials that align with community needs and project goals.

General Engagement Tasks

• Utilize shared project management tools such as event trackers and program schedules to enhance team collaboration and efficiency.
• Support the continued success of Friends of the Park groups through volunteer recruitment, event coordination, stakeholder collaboration, and social media content creation and management.
• Assist community engagement efforts related to the Citys capital budget process and civic initiatives.
• Build and maintain relationships with community members, partner organizations, and local government agencies.
• Represent the PPC at community meetings, tabling opportunities, public events, and partner coalitions across the city.
• Collaborate with the Community Engagement team and other PPC departments to identify and support outreach opportunities and special projects.
• Support Assistant Director of Community Engagement with the organization and coordination of community-based volunteer efforts which would include liaising between PPCs departments as well as outside partners/organizations and the City of Pittsburgh.
• Collecting data related to community engagement activities to aid in preparation of reports.
• Perform other related duties as apparent or assigned.

Internship Program Administration

• Lead recruitment efforts by reviewing applications, conducting interviews, and selecting candidates on a rolling basis with support from supervisor
• Coordinate onboarding and orientation processes in collaboration with Community Projects and Engagement team
• Provide support to interns through day-to-day supervision and mentorship, developing work plans aligned with engagement goals
• Train interns to participate at PPC outreach/tabling and stewardship events

Training and Experience (position requirements at entry):

• Bachelors Degree from an accredited university OR combined experience of 2 years in community engagement, community development, recreation, or other relevant work experience.
• Experience building successful partnerships and sustaining positive relationships within community-based settings.
• Strong proficiency in Canva, Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.
  

Knowledge of (position requirements at entry):

• General knowledge of urban park and greenspace systems, environmental sustainability, and/or community development.
• General knowledge of best practices in community engagement.
• Strong familiarity with Pittsburgh neighborhoods and the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancys mission, key stakeholders, and audiences.
• Strong commitment to equity.

Skills and Ability to (position requirements at entry):

• Ability to regularly work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. **
• Comfort and experience public speaking/participating in public meetings, engaging with community members, and navigating challenging conversations in a public setting.
• Demonstrate strong, self-directed organizational skills, an attention to detail, and ability to manage deadlines/prioritize tasks for multiple projects
• Demonstrate creativity, initiative, and an ability to self-direct tasks as necessary to accomplish project goals.

The physical ability to walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, pull, push, finger, feel, grasp, lift, talk, see, hear, and perform repetitive motions. The ability to remain in a sitting or standing position for extended periods of time.

The ability to safely operate a motor vehicle as this position is subject to local travel to and from work locations. There may be requirements to traverse on rough, uneven terrain, as well as wet and slippery surfaces.

Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The work may occasionally involve the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Regular evening and occasional weekend work is required to perform the duties of this job.
